Shopaholic? Get ready to do a double-take. It’s not just for you guys in Europe now—you can buy anything you want online and pay for it later with Sezzle , a new app from Swedish e-commerce company Klarna . The app allows you to set a due date for when you want to pay for an item, and then you can pay for it with any of your other payment methods, including your debit card or PayPal account. Easy! (Or is it?) The downside is that Sezzle doesn’t have any free trial, so you can’t check it out before you buy—and it won’t be free if you buy an item of $20 or more.
Every online store worth its salt today offers a Buy Now, Pay Later or Pay As You Go payment method (aka Sezzle or Klarna), so I decided to compare the two apps to see which one is better.
Klarna vs Sezzle
I’ve written many articles about buy now and pay later apps, but I’ve never compared Klarna and Sezzle. Both are very popular, and while there are some differences, both are very successful. So how would those two do in the fighting ring? This is what we will discover in the Klarna vs Sezzle comparison.
Message: Some information about Klarna is taken from the local Klarna Australia website and may differ from your region.

Availability of Klarna and Sezzle
Klarna is one of the applications available in more than 10 countries. You can use the application when you are in one of the following countries.
- New Zealand
- UNITED KINGDOM
- United States
Sezzle is only available in the United States and Canada, but sellers in other countries can sign up for the service. More than 34,000 stores in both countries offer this service.
Klarna can offer signing options with local banks or a finance company. For example, in Australia you can register and use your Commonwealth Bank account to use Klarna.
Other options for registration in Klarna are :
- card or bank account details
- Date of birth (age verification)
- E-mail address
The first steps are to create an account. Refund information will be provided later, before you make your initial purchase.
Sezzle also queries the same kind of data. The first action is to check the phone number. Once this is done, you will be asked to give money:
- E-mail address
- Card or bank details
- Reliable means of identification
- Date of birth
Credit control and affection
Both Klarna and Sezzle perform a soft credit check, which does not affect your score, but gives both companies an idea of your overall score.

How do they both work?
How buying now and paying later works
There are several ways to use Klarna. The Klarna application is a browser that allows you to visit online shops in your area. The app offers a payment option with Klarna. Since the application is a browser, you may need to log in with a Store account. For example, if you shop on eBay, you will need to register with eBay.
When you get to the payment page, click on Pay with Klarna. The next step is to enter the amount you wish to spend. If the amount exceeds your limit, an error regarding your maximum limit will be displayed.
In the next part, Klarna gets creative and creates a ghost card, also known as a disposable card. The ghost has an amount of money that you have invested that can be used for this purchase.
You can also use Klarna in the shop. The app offers the ability to generate a digital card that can be added to Google or Apple Pay. But to use the card, you must:
- Access to the Klarna application
- Click on the In-Store option.
- Store locator
- Enter the amount on the following screen
- Click on the refund method and confirm the details of the refund.
- Finally, use your card with Google or Apple Pay.
How the mouthpiece works
Sezzle, on the other hand, is similar to Afterpay, where you can find the Pay with Sezzle option and log into your account to pay online. The company also offers a virtual card that can be added to Google or Apple Pay. You must request the card in the app to access it, and the card limit may differ from your maximum limit.
The virtual card only works in a limited number of stores (in-store). So before using the card in a store, you should check if the brand supports the Sezzle virtual card.
Klarna against Limits of the offer of Sezzle
Klarna is generous and can offer up to $1000 to start. The company has said that depending on your account status, we may increase the limit.
The website also mentions that you can try to buy an item that is more expensive than your maximum limit to see if the system will honor your request. In that case, your limit will automatically be increased.

Sezzle, on the other hand, has a $2,500 limit, but before you make a purchase, they check several things to make sure you get your money back in a timely manner. One of these is the payment of an advance of 25% of the order amount. You can also expect your limit to increase after a number of successful redemptions.
Refunds – Klarna App
Klarna offers 6 weeks to pay back the loan. The first payment is made on the day of purchase, the rest every two weeks. You also have the option to delay payment if you need more time.
Sezzle works in a similar way and gives you 6 weeks to pay it back. The first payment is made on the day of purchase, the rest every two weeks.
Late payment surcharge
Since Klarna is available in different regions, the amount of the overdue fee depends on the region. In Australia, the fee ranges from $3 to $15, depending on the total value of the order. The following table is taken from the website and includes late payment fees (Klarna Australia website).
|Command value||Late payment surcharge||Maximum card|
|from $0 to $59.99||$3||$9|
|From $60 to $99.99.||$5||$15|
|From $100 to $199.99.||$7||$21|
Klarna’s late penalty in Australia
You can get an extra two days for the refund if you miss a payment. The company charges $10 and your account will be deactivated until you get your money back.

Which one suits you best?
Well, that’s a complicated question. Based on what we’ve discovered above, I recommend choosing Klarna if you need an app for online shopping. It offers a decent amount of money to spend, and you can spend it in more stores than Sezzle. Sezzle is a great option that offers over $2,000, but it’s not available in as many stores as Klarna.
The third option is for me to subscribe to both and use them on different occasions. For example, if a service offers cash back for a particular store, use it. It’s a win-win solution.
With the rapid growth of online shopping, the days of buy now and pay later will soon be over, and with new services we can make good profits. So I recommend you sign up for at least one service to continue to enjoy the rewards in the future.
Anyway, the Klarna vs Sezzle article talked about both services. What do you think of those two? Do you have any suggestions? Share it in the comments so we can discuss this further.
