Getting to know Windows 11

Windows has always been a global innovation scene. It was the backbone of the global economy and the place where non-serious startups gained prominence. The Internet was born and raised on Windows. It’s where many of us wrote our first email, played our first video game, and wrote our first line of code. Windows is where people create, communicate, learn and succeed – a platform that more than a billion people rely on today.

The responsibility of designing for so many people is not something we take lightly. In the past 18 months, the way we use our PCs has changed incredibly: We have gone from adapting the PC to our lives to adapting our entire lives to the PC. Our devices were not only a place where we went to meet, take classes and get things done, but also a place where we played games with friends, watched our favorite programs and, perhaps most importantly, socialized. That’s how we recreated office conversations, hallway conversations, training sessions, happy hours and holiday parties – in digital form.

There was a very significant change in the PC we saw and felt – from something practical and functional to something personal and emotional. That’s what inspired us to build the next generation of Windows. Create for yourself a place that is familiar, where you can create, learn, play and, most importantly, connect with each other in new ways.

Today, I’m proud and excited to introduce Windows 11 – the Windows that brings you closer to what you love.

At a time when the PC is becoming increasingly central to our lives, Windows 11 is designed to bring you closer to the things you love.

Redesigned for productivity, creativity and simplicity

We’ve simplified the design and usability to increase your productivity and inspire your creativity. It is modern, fresh, clean and beautiful. From the new start button and taskbar to every sound, font and icon, everything has been done with the intention of giving you control and a sense of calm and ease. We’ve put Start in the spotlight and made it easy to quickly find what you need. Start leverages the power of the cloud and Microsoft 365 to show you your latest files regardless of the platform or device you’ve previously viewed them on, even if it’s an Android or iOS device.

Windows has always been about helping you work the way you want to, by giving you the flexibility of multiple windows and the ability to link applications together. With the new version of Windows 11, we’re introducing snapshot layouts, snapshot groups, and desktops to provide an even more powerful way to multitask and keep track of what you need to do. These are new features that will help you organize your windows and optimize your screen space so you can see what you need in a visually clean way. You can also create separate offices for each part of your life and customize them however you like – imagine having an office for work, play or school.

Windows 11 eliminates complexity and offers simplicity.

A faster way to get in touch with the people you care about

Another important aspect of getting closer to what you love is getting closer to the people you love. Over the past 18 months, we’ve seen new trends in how we connect with people digitally in meaningful ways. Even as we begin to return to more personal communication, we want to continue to promote closeness between people, wherever they may be. And we don’t want the device or platform you’re working on to be an obstacle.

With Windows 11, we’re proud to introduce Microsoft Teams chat integrated into the taskbar. Now you can instantly connect via text, chat, voice or video with all your personal contacts, regardless of the platform or device they are on, Windows, Android or iOS. If the person you’re talking to hasn’t downloaded the Teams app, you can contact them via text message in two directions.

Windows 11 also offers a more natural way to connect with friends and family through Teams. Allows you to deactivate or start a presentation directly from the taskbar.

The best PC gaming experience

If you’re a gamer, Windows 11 is for you. Games have always been an integral part of Windows. Today, hundreds of millions of people around the world play Windows and find fun and connection with family and friends. Windows 11 takes advantage of the full potential of your system’s hardware with the latest gaming technologies. For example: DirectX 12 Ultimate, which delivers immersive and compelling graphics at high frame rates; DirectStorage for faster loading and more detailed game worlds; and Auto HDR for a wider, more vibrant color palette for a truly immersive visual experience. Our commitment to hardware compatibility has not changed: Windows 11 supports your favorite gaming accessories and PC peripherals. Xbox Game Pass for PC or Ultimate gives gamers access to over 100 premium PC games. New games are coming out all the time, and it’s still easy to find people to play with, whether it’s on PC or on a console.

A faster way to get the information you need

With Windows 11, get the news and information you want faster with widgets, a new personalized feed based on artificial intelligence, and better performance from the Microsoft Edge browser. Even when we are at our most focused and creative, we need breaks, time to connect with the outside world or do a mental reset. These days we often grab our phones to check the news, weather or notifications. You can now open a similar view directly from your desktop. When you open your personalized feed, it glides across the screen like glass without interfering with your activities. For designers and publishers, widgets also open up new possibilities for delivering custom content in Windows. Our goal is to create a dynamic channel for global brands and local designers, benefiting both consumers and designers.

The all-new Microsoft Store with your favorite apps and entertainment

The new Microsoft Store is a central and trusted place to find apps and content to browse, create, play, work and learn. It has been redesigned to improve speed and has a brand new design that is beautiful and user friendly. Not only do we offer more apps than ever before, but we make all content – apps, games, series, movies – easier to find and discover through organized stories and collections. We’re excited to announce that leading apps and third-party apps, such as Microsoft Teams, Visual Studio, Disney+, Adobe Creative Cloud, Zoom and Canva – all of which offer incredible possibilities for entertainment, inspiration and communication – will soon be available on the Microsoft Store. When you download the app from the store, you can rest assured that it has been tested for safety and reliability for the whole family.

We are also excited to announce that for the first time we will be porting Android applications to Windows. Starting this year, it will be possible to open Android apps from the Microsoft Store and download them from the Amazon Appstore. Imagine being able to record and share videos from TikTok or use Khan Academy Kids for virtual learning right from your PC. We will report on this experience in the coming months. We look forward to working with Amazon and Intel using their Intel Bridge technology.

Create a more open ecosystem that provides new opportunities for developers and creatives.

We are taking steps to further open up the Microsoft Store to provide more commercial opportunities for creators and developers. We enable developers and ISVs to offer their applications, whether built as Win32, Progressive Web App (PWA), Universal Windows App (UWP) or any other application framework, creating the opportunity to reach and engage more people. We are also announcing a gradual change in our revenue sharing policy: app developers can now host their commercial apps in our store and receive 100% of the revenue – Microsoft receives nothing. App developers can still take advantage of our 85/15 competitive revenue sharing agreement. We believe that creating a more open ecosystem will ultimately benefit our customers by providing secure and seamless access to the applications, games, movies, entertainment and web content they need and want.

Faster, more reliable and more computer literate

For IT professionals, Windows 11 is built on the consistent, compatible and trusted foundation of Windows 10. You plan, prepare, and deploy Windows 11 the same way you do now with Windows 10. Upgrading to Windows 11 is the same as upgrading to Windows 10. The familiar management tools you use today, such as Microsoft Endpoint Manager, Cloud Configuration, Windows Update for Business, and Autopilot, will support your environment tomorrow as you integrate Windows 11 into your infrastructure.

As with Windows 10, we place a high value on application compatibility, which is one of the key design principles of Windows 11. We’ll make sure your applications work on Windows 11 with App Assure, a service that helps customers with 150 or more users resolve application issues at no additional cost.

Windows 11 is also secure by design, with new built-in security technologies that strengthen protection from the chip to the cloud for increased productivity and new features. Windows 11 is a zero-trust operating system for data protection and access across all devices. We work closely with our OEM partners and silicon manufacturers to strengthen our security foundation to meet the demands of the changing threat landscape and new hybrid work environment.

Now is a good time to buy a PC

From day one of Windows 11 development, we worked closely with our hardware and silicon partners to ensure seamless integration of software and hardware. This joint development starts with innovations in silicon. From AMD and the incredible graphics depth of Ryzen processors, to the incredible performance of Intel’s 11th generation processors. From next-generation and Evo processors to Qualcomm’s mastery of artificial intelligence, 5G and Arm support, innovations from our silicon partners combine the best of Windows 11 with the world’s largest hardware ecosystem.

Working with Dell, HP, Lenovo, Samsung, Surface and others, we’re making sure the majority of PCs* you can buy today are Windows 11 ready – across a range of form factors and price points.

Together, we optimized Windows 11 to be not only faster and more efficient, but also to take advantage of improved touch, ink, and voice controls.

If you’re using Windows 11 on a tablet without a keyboard, we’ve improved the touch experience by creating more space between icons in the taskbar, adding larger touch targets and subtle visual cues to make adjusting and moving windows easier, and adding gestures. We’re also introducing haptic technology that makes using the pen more fun and exciting – you can hear and feel vibrations as you type, edit or draw. Finally, we have made improvements for voice input. Windows 11 is very good at recognizing what you say; it can automatically underline your words and supports voice commands. This is a great feature if you want to take a break from typing and go over your ideas instead.

Windows 11 will be available as a free upgrade for eligible Windows 10 PCs and on new PCs starting this holiday season. To see if your current Windows 10 PC qualifies for a free upgrade to Windows 11, go to Windows.com and download the PC Health Check app. We’re also working with our retail partners to make sure the Windows 10 PCs you buy today are ready to upgrade to Windows 11. The free update will be rolled out to eligible Windows 10 PCs starting this holiday season and running through 2022. And next week, we will begin sharing early versions of Windows 11 with members of the Windows Insider Program, a passionate community of Windows fans whose feedback is very important to us.

This is just the beginning

Windows is not just an operating system, it is a fabric that is woven into our lives and work. It is the place where we connect with people, learn, work and play. Over time it became familiar and adapted to us. We hope you’re as excited about Windows 11 as we are.

We can’t wait to see what Windows 11 enables and inspires people to do.
